“At first, interior designer Shavonda Gardner hesitated to tackle the backyard of the Sacramento home she shares with her wife, Naomi, and their two kids. ‘It felt like a park to us,’ she says of the 10,000-square-foot backyard, which originally consisted of a lawn, a few trees, and a couple old sheds. But any initial trepidation she had about the space dissolved when she realized she could translate her interior design skills outdoors. “I began to look at it as if I was developing a floor plan,” she says.
Using her family’s interests as her guide, Gardner divided the yard into distinct zones, with room to entertain, grow vegetables and flowers, and relax. She even squeezed in a home office, a prefab backyard studio by Studio Home. Here’s how she made the most of every square inch of space.”
